problem with smartmedia Post #1

Hi,

I use since years smartmedias with my rs7k. I often save my rs datas on my PC. Last week, after a long programming session, I was going to save my datas, but when I inserted the smartmedia as usual in my PC, the smartmedia card appeard void ! Nothing at all. I only can see that the card is full ('cause when I do a right click on it I see 62,4 Mo on it... but I see no file at all.

Any ideas ? Did someone had such a problem yet ?

i have the same problem and i've encountered it today - 2 days before my upcoming gig on Wednesday ...
I'm screwed I guess. When I try to load stuff from the card, it appears as it's completely empty.
Nor it's possible to save anything onto the card, and nor it's possible to format the card (it keeps saying "write protected" even though the write protection seal has been removed a milion years ago).

I don't know what to do. I even formatted the card in Windows and it doesn't seem to help.
Please help me. There's no way I could get a new smart media card in 2 days.

The last thing i want is to cancel the gig ...

i wish u good luck in solvin the prob... but sadly, i think ur screwed.

i had a similar prob, and i couldnt find a way to get the card info back... i havent thrown it out, but luckily for me i have all the info on 2 harddrives... i think the Olympus xD cards with the smartmedia adapter is much more reliable... an annoyance stickin out the RS, but a minor one at best.

i suggest u invest in that immediately!

thanks for the reply slick.

do you think the problem is with the card or with the sampler? (taking into consideration that the card is perfectly readable and usable via PC card reader)
because if it's about the card, then screw that, i'mma get another one or invest in the xD system you were talking about.
but if it's about the sampler then I'm not really sure what i'm gonna do next.

I think I remember reading on either this forum or the RS7000@yahoogroups.com mailing list about this problem in the past. Somehow the format had got corrupted and was giving similar read/write errors on what was apparently a perfectly good card. I believe the solution they found to make that card read/write again was to use some low-level reformmating software developed by the card manufacturer. Of course that would completely wipe all the data currently on the card, but it might make it writable again so you don't have to buy another card. Something about the basic file structure being corrupted (TOC, FAT Table or otherwise). Sadly I don't remember where the post was. You might want to search the archives of both this forum and that list.

Regarding your gig in 2 days: if you have an external SCSI ZIP drive with ZIP disks (or other SCSI Magneto-Optical drives) with your data saved on them you could use that in place of the primary SmartMedia port to load/save your data for your gig. Back when I still owned my RS7k I used to always secondary backup to my SCSI ZIP100 disks and tertiary backup to my Mac Mini's hard disk (which was 4th backed up to an external HD on a monthly basis). One can never have too many backups.

Edit: here's one long (2 page) thread mentioning similiar issues on this forum):
http://data.rs7000.org/forums/showt...ight=SmartMedia
That smprep.exe program mentioned by Spesimen in the second to last posting on the bottom of the second page might hold the clue.

Here's another link about somebody having problems with a Yamaha Motif, SmartMedia card, smprep.exe, and their solution (not using smprep but instead HexEditing the card):
http://www.motifator.com/forums/pri...76513&type=post

And a third opinion/solution, from someone using a Yamaha S90 with SmartMedia:

Best of luck with it.

To be honest I've had trouble with all methods of backup at one stage or another. Smart media cards, scsi zip and scsi hard drive.

I had an RS7000 file corrupt on me the other day actually. I had loaded it up via via the hard drive (attached to pc) and made some edits. I then recorded the loops in to Ableton. Then I decided to save the RS7000 pattern file to the same location as the new Ableton project (on a different hard drive) and it corrupted. When I tried to re-load the original pattern file I was given an error message on the RS. Very strange. Anyway it all boils down to backups..............
